Opticals: ILO/IMO Optical standards are high and many a would-be sailor has been disappointed by being unable to get his certification due to deficiencies in his eyesight. Stringent optical testing to recognize slight colour blindness, insufficient night vision etc are a regular necessity for all professional crew. This is to avoid danger and accidents on lookout duties. In addition, sunglasses for seafarers must have particular properties and just buying a trendy brand at your local Optical Outlet will not do the job.
